In the midst of a drought of historic proportions in Brazil, the ONS (National Electricity Authority) recommended to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, this Thursday (19), the return of daylight saving time. The recommendation will be debated by other Government parties, but will not be implemented before the end of the election period, on October 27. The measure was announced at an extraordinary meeting of the CMSE (Electronic Sector Supervision Council) in Rio de Janeiro.

According to Minister Alexandre Silveira (Mines and Energy), who participated in the meeting, the council approved the “reference” for the return of the daylight saving time.

The portfolio director said that it is possible to have a translation in ten days. Implementation of the measure would depend on a presidential order. By moving the clocks forward by one hour, there will be an initiative to reduce the electricity system in the middle of the drought, which challenges the sector. Silveira shows the demand for energy between 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm, when the solar generation is lost and more use of thermal plants, which are more expensive, is necessary. Running daylight saving time will come to “de-stress” the system, especially at that time.

“We do not have power generation problems, thanks to a good system, but we have a time of day, when we need maximum power, between 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm, in which we must send almost all The park is hot. We know that this is more expensive and stresses the system more,” said Silveira.
