Opel Grandland successor will be electric and German

by time news

Stellantis has announced that it will invest more than €130 million in the Opel plant in Eisenach, Germany, where the current generation of the Opel Grandland mid-size SUV is produced.

Currently the model is also made in Sochaux, France, as well as in Walvis Bay, Namibia, however, the next generation will be exclusively produced in Eisenach.

This new generation will be manufactured on the new STLA Medium platform, with production scheduled to start in the second half of 2024.

Arnaud Deboeuf, Chiel Manufacturing Officer at Stellantis, says: “Eisenach, our most compact plant in Germany, has demonstrated a strong drive in quality improvements.”

Deboeuf continues: “With this allocation of Stellantis’ new all-BEV platform, STLA Medium, the highly skilled workforce at the Eisenach site will continue to improve the cost and quality of vehicles produced to delight customers.”

Without giving details of the next Grandland, Opel will follow its plan to have a 100% electric portfolio in 2028, thus seeking the forced electrification of its product range with the new Stellantis platforms.

The choice of the Grandland 2025 in Germany reinforces the position of the local manufacturer in the midst of Stellantis’ globalization.

Florian Huettl, CEO of Opel, says: “We have been building high-quality vehicles here in Thuringia for 31 years and continuously improve our competitiveness. We will remain on this clear path with the electric successor to the Opel Grandland.”

Huettl continues: “This decision is another important step for Opel towards its stated goal of being an all-electric brand in Europe by 2028.”

Inaugurated in September 1992, the Eisenach plant began with the production of the famous Opel Astra, with the industrial unit located in the state of Thuringia, central Germany.

In 2022, the unit celebrated 30 years of production and celebrated the manufacture of 3.7 million vehicles.

The current Opel Grandland is derived from the EMP2 platform, being one of the first cars of the German brand with French DNA.
