More than 150 Greek composers, lyricists, singers and performers, who are in favor of his bill for the protection and enhancement of Greek-language song and orchestral music performance, sent an open letter.

In this letter, they emphasize that the legislative initiative of the Minister of Culture, Linas Mendoni, to have a 45% quota for the Greek song that will be played in public spaces, e.g. hotels etc., is a ray of light.

The letter

Today, all of us Greek song people, composers, lyricists, performers and musical performers are seriously worried about the future of Greek song, the ‘heart’ of the country’s modern cultural heritage.

In a few years, the landscape of Greek music production will look bombarded, having been battered, not only by the imported song supported by organized and stable funding and promotion, but also by the repertoire that will be mass-produced through Artificial Intelligence, which as cheaper, it will compete directly with ours in all genres and distribution channels.

At the same time, in the year 2024, we are still vigorously negotiating our self-evident fees for the use of our works by television stations, radio stations and audio-visual productions. We demand fairer fees from the major digital music platforms. And we continue to explain to Greek businessmen who refuse to pay intellectual and relative rights, that our works are not ‘common property’, but our own property, the result of time, investment and labor, on which our livelihood, our future depends.

The legislative initiative of the Minister of Culture is for the first time a ray of light and hope after the difficult and gloomy years of the pandemic. For the first time, they treat us, the Greek creators, performers and performers, as well as the national musical repertoire, as an equal link in the modern cultural heritage, which, together with the ancient monuments, must be saved and highlighted, even more, especially today.

For a long time we have considered support from the state imperative. We can no longer face all these challenges alone. It is not a question of talent or artistic vision, but who will last until the final fall. We don’t want that day to come when we will be shown behind the window of a museum with the inscription “songwriter”, “singer”, “instrumentalist”.

The Greek song, its creators and contributors have a long, wonderful journey that makes Greece proud. Greek poetry set to music is over 2,000 years old. It is not certain, however, that it can survive another day, if drastic and coordinated measures are not taken now to protect Greek song and Greek music.
