OpenAI is poised to enter the hardware market, with plans to unveil its first device in the latter half of 2024. The announcement, made by OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane at a panel hosted by Axios at the World Economic Forum in Davos, marks a meaningful shift for the artificial intelligence leader, currently best known for its ChatGPT chatbot.
From Screen-Free Concepts to ‘Sweet Pea’
Last November, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman envisioned the company’s initial hardware offering as a more “peaceful and calm” choice to smartphones like the iPhone. Early speculation suggested a screen-free and pocketable device, but more recent reports indicate a narrower focus: AI-powered earbuds.
According to sources in Asian publications and tech leakers, the project, internally codenamed “Sweet Pea,” aims to deliver a unique earbud experience. These earbuds could leverage a custom 2-nanometer processor to handle AI tasks directly on the device, reducing reliance on cloud connectivity. This localized processing capability would be a key differentiator, potentially offering faster response times and enhanced privacy.
Manufacturing Partnerships and Ambitious Sales Goals
OpenAI is reportedly evaluating manufacturing partners to scale production of “Sweet Pea.” A large Taiwanese newspaper indicated the company initially explored a collaboration with China-based Luxshare, but is now leaning towards a partnership with taiwan’s Foxconn. The company has set ambitious targets, aiming to ship between 40 to 50 million units in the first year of sales.
Controlling the AI Experience
With nearly a billion weekly users of ChatGPT, OpenAI currently relies on existing devices and platforms to reach its audience. Developing its own hardware would allow the company to exert greater control over the user experience, potentially enabling the release of exclusive and purpose-built features for its AI assistant. However, successfully integrating with existing operating systems will be crucial to challenge established players like Apple’s AirPods.
A Challenging Market Landscape
The path to success in the AI hardware space is far from guaranteed. Previous attempts to launch innovative AI devices have faced significant hurdles. Last year, the humane Pin was sold to HP after failing to gain traction. Rabbit continues to navigate the market following initial hype in 2024, and the Friend AI companion necklace faced criticism for its marketing approach.
Despite these setbacks, major tech companies are actively investing in wearable technology. Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses are experiencing high demand, and Amazon recently acquired Bee, an AI meeting recorder, signaling a growing interest in AI-powered companions.
the TechCrunch Disrupt event, scheduled for October 13-15, 2026, in san Francisco, will likely be a key venue for showcasing future developments in this rapidly evolving field.
