A revolutionary AI-powered search engine with real-time information.

OpenAI announced the launch of SearchGPT, an artificial intelligence search engine that provides real-time information and attempts to organize and make sense of search results, rather than just displaying lists of links.

The search engine starts with a large text box asking the user, “What are you looking for?”. Unlike traditional search engines, SearchGPT summarizes its findings and presents brief descriptions of results with accompanying links. For example, if someone searches for information about music festivals, the engine will offer descriptions of the events and links for further reading.

Additionally, the engine provides details on topics such as tomato planting, analyzing various varieties and offering additional information through links on the sidebar. An interesting feature is the “visual answers,” although OpenAI has not disclosed details about how they work.

SearchGPT, which is based on the GPT-4 models, will initially be available to 10,000 beta users. OpenAI is collaborating with third parties to create the search results and hopes to integrate search functionalities directly into ChatGPT.

This initiative by OpenAI could pose a significant threat to Google, which is already trying to integrate artificial intelligence features into its services. Furthermore, OpenAI is in direct competition with the startup Perplexity, which focuses on AI answer engines.

OpenAI seems to have taken into account the reactions from publishers and states that SearchGPT was developed in collaboration with news partners such as The Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, and Vox Media. Publishers will have the ability to manage how they appear in search functions and choose whether their content will be used to train AI models.

The launch of SearchGPT as a prototype allows OpenAI to test and improve its service. However, the challenge of high operating costs remains, with training and inference costs reaching $7 billion this year. SearchGPT will be free during its initial phase, but OpenAI will need to find ways to convert it into a revenue source.

The rapid developments by OpenAI have attracted millions of users to ChatGPT, but costs remain high. SearchGPT represents an ambitious move by the company to establish itself in the search market and compete with industry giants.
