OpenAI is removing rate limits for text chats on ChatGPT’s free and Go tiers next week while shifting default traffic to GPT-5.6 Luna. Simultaneously, Plus and Pro users receive an updated GPT-5.6 Sol model and a new reasoning slider to control response depth.
Free Tier Expansion and the Shift to GPT-5.6 Luna
OpenAI is overhauling its free and low-cost subscription tiers by removing usage caps for standard text conversations. Starting next week, users on the free and Go plans can converse with the chatbot without running into the traditional rate limits that previously interrupted long-form brainstorming or document reviews.
This shift alters the positioning of the platform’s non-paying tier. Rather than acting as a restricted marketing funnel, the free version is turning into a standalone tool for daily use. However, these removal of limits applies strictly to text prompts. Prompts incorporating file uploads, images, image generation, and the updated voice mode continue to draw from separate usage restrictions.
Backing this expansion is a transition in the underlying architecture. Debuted earlier in July, Luna was engineered specifically for speed and everyday interactions. According to company data, responses generated by Luna exhibit a 62% lower rate of factual errors compared to its predecessor.
The New Think Button Brings Advanced Reasoning to Free Accounts
Alongside unlimited text chats, free and Go subscribers are receiving a dedicated Think button across web and mobile interfaces. When selected, the feature prompts the system to engage in a hidden chain-of-thought process, evaluating multiple approaches before returning an answer.

This addition gives non-paying users access to multi-step reasoning models previously locked behind expensive tiers. Complex tasks like drafting research outlines or planning multi-project timelines can now be executed on demand without a financial penalty.
OpenAI executives framed the adjustments as part of a broader push to make frontier technology accessible.
Refining GPT-5.6 Sol and Adding the Thought Slider for Subscribers
While free tiers gain accessibility, paid subscribers on Plus and Pro tiers are receiving operational upgrades.

The updated flagship model is built to make fewer mistakes when handling dates, numbers, sources, rules, or assumptions.
Paid users also gained access to a new toolbar slider.
Competitive Pressures and Market Context
These sweeping updates arrive as western labs face mounting pricing pressure. Cheaper Chinese open-weight models have accelerated competition, forcing companies like OpenAI and Anthropic to justify higher subscription fees by proving their proprietary models deliver superior reliability and reasoning depth.
That pressure has driven rapid price adjustments. OpenAI recently cut prices for two GPT-5.6 models—Luna and Terra—just weeks after their initial launch, breaking historical patterns where price cuts typically arrived months down the line.
For OpenAI, the long-term bet relies on habituation. By lifting text constraints and expanding reasoning tools, the platform aims to cement itself as an indispensable daily utility. As OpenAI Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar noted regarding user retention, engagement deepens significantly over time as users send more messages and apply the technology across wider categories of work.
What Remains Unanswered
Despite the elimination of rate limits for standard text, infrastructure costs remain a central variable for artificial intelligence providers. OpenAI has not disclosed the engineering breakthrough that enabled it to absorb the inference costs of unlimited text generation on free accounts, leaving open questions regarding how sustainable these expanded capacities will prove during unexpected traffic surges.
