A judicial investigation, in particular for attempted assassination, was opened on Wednesday after the car-ram attack in early July on the home of the mayor of L’Haÿ-les-Roses (Val-de-Marne), the Créteil prosecutor’s office told AFP on Sunday.

The prosecution also retained the counts of destruction of the property of others by a dangerous means for people in an organized gang and of participation in a criminal association with a view to the preparation of a crime.

The case will be investigated by two investigating judges, added the prosecution.

On the night of July 1 to 2, at the heart of the riots caused throughout France by the death of young Nahel M., killed by a police officer on June 27 during a road check in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine), a burning vehicle had been rushed to the flag of Mayor Vincent Jeanbrun (LR).

Present in the house, the wife of the elected official, the departmental councilor Mélanie Nowak, was injured while fleeing with her two young children and had to be hospitalized.

This violent episode had aroused great emotion in the country and the indignation of the entire political class.

A march in support of the mayor and his family, bringing together elected officials and residents, took place the day after the attack in this city of just over 30,000 inhabitants south of Paris.

An investigation had been opened by the prosecution and entrusted to the judicial police, first for attempted murder before being extended to the heads of criminal associations with a view to committing a crime and destruction of property by fire in an organized gang.

It is in this context that twelve people were arrested on July 12, then placed in police custody.

These people were released the following day, without prosecution at this stage.
