Opening of the IMO Assembly, with the participation of Morocco
London – Morocco is participating in the 33rd session of the Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London on Monday, with a high-level delegation led by the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mohamed Abdeljalil.
Composed of officials from the ministry and public establishments and companies operating in the maritime transport sector, the Moroccan delegation intends, among other things, to promote Morocco’s candidacy for the IMO Council (2024-2025) and hold bilateral meetings with officials of the Organization, as well as ministers of member countries, with the aim of developing cooperation in the field of transport.
The Organization’s supreme governing body meets once every two years in a regular session. Open to all 175 Member States and three Associate Members, this session will continue until 6 December. The Assembly is responsible for approving the programme of work and the budget and determining the financial functioning of the Organization. It also elects the members of the Council.
In addition, the Assembly is expected to adopt certain resolutions emanating from the five IMO committees and approve measures taken by the Council regarding the admission of new intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations as observers.
This session is expected to adopt the Organization’s Strategic Plan for the six-year period from 2024 to 2029, as well as the Organization’s budget and programme of work for 2024 and 2025.
In addition, the Assembly will be asked to approve the appointment of Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco (Republic of Panama) as Secretary-General of the IMO, for an initial term of four years starting on 1 January 2024. He is to replace Kitack Lim.
