Over three days, his work will highlight the best ways to harness education to address global challenges related to climate change, biodiversity loss, green and circular economies, technological progress and building resilient relationships with the planet through education.

Participants will also explore ways to build the capacity of educators, empower youth and take local action through education for sustainable development.

The meeting will culminate in a document called the “Berlin Declaration on Education for Sustainable Development,” which will propose a series of policies encompassing teaching, learning, professional training and civic engagement.

Environmental education is at the heart of UNESCO’s concerns. Aware of this major challenge, the UN organization has set itself the goal of making environmental education an essential component of school curricula in all countries by 2025.

In this regard, UNESCO, the main UN agency responsible for education for sustainable development, which aims to ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge, skills, values and initiative needed to act in favour of the planet and live sustainably, is uniting the efforts of its 193 Member States to achieve this goal.

This includes guiding countries’ actions towards supporting curriculum reform and monitoring progress to ensure that everyone acquires the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed to bring about positive change and protect the future of our planet.
