Opening up the renewal of the national leadership of the National Action Party (PAN) to the citizens would be a mistake that could lead to their extinction, according to political analyst Javier Lozano.
Lozano, who served in the PAN during the six-year term of Felipe Calderon (2006-2012), explained that this scenario is not provided for in the PAN statutes and could potentially interfere with the upcoming Morena presidential election.
“The statutes don’t allow for that. It’s up to the party council or militants. We can change that, but not right now.”
“Who would get involved if the vote is opened to the PAN leadership? And who would they choose?” Lozano asked, suggesting that the move would likely benefit the party’s weakest rivals. ”They want to extinguish us. We can’t let that happen.”

Lozano also criticized the current national leader, Marko Cortes, saying that his leadership has been disastrous for the party.
“He has disappointed everyone, or many PAN supporters. I don’t think he has the ability to impose or direct anyone in the leadership,” he commented, casting doubt on the possibility that Cortes will influence the appointment of his successor.
Lozano argued that if the PAN wants to survive, it will have to make changes to its statutes.
However, he also warned against diverting attention from what he considers the most important issue in the country: the over-representation of certain parties in the Congress of the Union.
“That is the big issue at the moment for the country. If they want to talk about electoral fraud, that is electoral fraud on the table. And we depend on three magistrates from the upper chamber of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation to make the final decision on this issue.

Lozano argued that no political force should have the capacity to reform the Constitution on their own.
“More important than June 2 is August 23, and I am not exaggerating. The Republic, the division of powers, the checks and balances are absolutely at risk. If you want to see yourself in Venezuela’s mirror, stick to over-representation.”
