Operation Prosperity Guardian Launched to Address Houthi Threat in Red Sea
The recent surge in reckless Houthi attacks originating from Yemen has sparked concerns over the free flow of commerce, innocent mariner safety, and violations of international law. The Red Sea, a critical waterway essential to freedom of navigation and international trade, has come under threat from the non-state actor’s ballistic missile and uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks on merchant vessels.
In response to this international challenge, an important new multinational security initiative called Operation Prosperity Guardian has been announced. Under the umbrella of the Combined Maritime Forces and the leadership of Task Force 153, the operation aims to address security challenges in the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
The initiative is set to bring together multiple countries, including the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles, and Spain. Their joint efforts will focus on ensuring freedom of navigation for all countries and bolstering regional security and prosperity in the area.
“The recent escalation in reckless Houthi attacks originating from Yemen threatens the free flow of commerce, endangers innocent mariners, and violates international law,” stated the official launching the Operation Prosperity Guardian. “This is an international challenge that demands collective action.”
