BOLZANO. Over a million checks on people and vehicles197 people stopped, arrested or reported: this is a summary of the activities carried out in the year 2024 by ‘Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige grouping’testifying to the daily effort of Italian soldiers engaged in the ‘Safe Roads’ operation. Over the course of 12 months, over 900 women and men of the Army were employed in the operation launched in 2008 and extended several times over the years, aimed at combating crime, guaranteeing the security of sensitive objectives, ensuring constant control of the territory, prevent and combat the conduct of crimes, operating in synergy with the police forces.
The Group – led by Colonel Roberto Spampanato, commander of the 10th Engineers Regiment stationed in Cremona – worked under the command of Division General Michele Risi, commander of the Alpine Troops, coordinating with the prefectures and respective police headquarters of Milan, Como, Bergamo, Brescia, Monza Brianza, Bolzano, Varese e Sondrio during the G7 Summit period. Since April the soldiers have also been used for the security of the main railway junctions and the soldiers have been deployed at the Milan Central, Garibaldi and Rogoredo stations. In this last year, the Group Command – which is based at the historic ‘Santa Barbara’ barracks in Milan – was also under the responsibility of the 3rd Mountain Artillery Regiment and the 7th Alpini Regiment. General Risi underlined “the pride for the important attestations of esteem and gratitude received from the local authorities, but above all from the sense of gratitude shown by the population towards the Army”.
