Operation Sindoor Proves No Target Is Beyond Reach, Says IAF Chief

Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh stated that the Indian Air Force’s precision strikes during Operation Sindoor—covering 1,200 kilometers in breadth and 200 kilometers in depth along the western front—proved that no target is beyond reach.

Operation Sindoor was, above all, a validation of the capability-centric approach the IAF has been pursuing, said Air Chief Marshal AP Singh. The Indian Air Force launched Operation Sindoor in May 2025 after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, killed 26 people.

IAF Strikes the Western Front

The mission marked India’s most extensive cross-border military action since the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Indian forces first targeted nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist infrastructure.

Strikes later reached Rawalpindi, the military nerve center of Pakistan, after Islamabad continued to shelter terror groups.

Capability-Centric Strategy Wins Test

Air Chief Marshal Singh described the operation on Sunday, October 25, as a decisive test of an evolving operational philosophy. The military integrated every sensor, weapon, aircraft, and communication network to multiply their combined effect rather than relying on isolated platforms.

We have moved from thinking in terms of individual platforms to thinking in terms of capability, where every aircraft, sensor, weapon and network is integrated so that the combined effect is far greater than the sum of the parts. The operation put that philosophy to the test in real operations, and it delivered. It reaffirmed the decisive role of air power as both the nation’s primary responder and its strategic deterrent, and it reinforced the enduring importance of speed, precision, integration and adaptability, he said.

The mission used stand-off precision weapons, electronic warfare, layered air defenses, counter-unmanned aerial systems, and networked operations based on accurate intelligence.

Home-built assets provided the primary support for offensive and defensive operations. These included the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, the Astra beyond-visual-range missiles, and the Akash surface-to-air missile grid.

Military leadership stated that home-grown networked air defenses neutralized a large volume of stand-off munitions and hostile drones launched by Pakistan, ensuring zero collateral damage.

Air Force Adapts Tactics to Control Escalation

Air Chief Marshal Singh noted that the armed forces must maintain multiple viable choices and adjust rapidly to enemy tactics. He said a capability-centric force excels here by using a diverse array of instruments instead of a single option, which allowed the IAF to manage the pace of escalation and tailor its retaliation.

Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti, director general of air operations during the conflict, stressed that any subsequent conflict would require a fresh operational approach. While he stated that supporters and terrorists can no longer assume sanctuary across the border, he noted that future responses would not necessarily mirror past engagements.

India and Pakistan agreed to halt military action in the air, at sea, and on land on May 10, 2025, following talks between the Directors Generals of Military Operations of both nations.

Defense Vision 2047 Prioritizes Modernization

The Indian Air Force has linked its institutional goals to Viksit Bharat 2047, the national objective for a technologically self-reliant and secure India by its centenary of independence.

  • Increasing combat mass and fighter aircraft resources
  • Strengthening intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) prowess
  • Expanding electronic warfare and counter-UAS capabilities
  • Deploying resilient networks and artificial intelligence-enabled decision support systems
  • Enhancing logistics, maintenance infrastructure, and domestic defense production

Work is currently underway across all branches to create an integrated, multi-domain aerospace force under the IAF Space Vision 2047 and the Capability Perspective Plan-2047 to protect India’s economic and strategic interests.
