Ophthalmologist talks about lens problems and dispels the carrot myth

by time news

Is it true that ophthalmologists themselves prefer to wear glasses over lenses? What is more effective and safer? With these questions “RG” turned to the head of the ophthalmology department of the City Emergency Hospital of Rostov-on-Don, Irina Shangicheva.

There are plenty of arguments in favor of both glasses and lenses. Still, glasses are better, Irina Vasilievna?

Irina Shangicheva: I would not say that. It’s just that lenses are not suitable for everyone. Someone gets used to them and wears them without problems, while others cannot even wear them.

But there are also complications.

Irina Shangicheva: Indeed, now a lot of people resort to the help of doctors. This happens due to the illiterate use of contact lenses. People put on and forget about their existence.

The lens has turned up, something is clearly interfering with the eye, but we have a wedding, we are dancing. So they bring it to inflammation. If you feel uncomfortable, quit your weddings and dances and see a doctor. But this is again a question of personal responsibility, not the advantages or disadvantages of lenses and glasses.

Will a special diet help keep your eyes healthy? Start eating carrots, blueberries, drinking vitamin complexes?

Irina Shangicheva: Drink vitamins, especially if the doctor prescribed them for you, eat blueberries, spinach and carrots for health.

But do not forget about the blood-brain barrier, which passes some substances along with the blood into the brain and, including the eyes, and some do not. There are now a lot of aggressive advertisements that praise methods of healing and drugs, which are only perplexing for supporters of evidence-based medicine.

Therefore, they ate a carrot – good, but still go to the doctor. And if an ophthalmologist advised an operation to save eyesight, you need to listen and do it without delay.
