The opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea, repeatedly announced their intention to push for the bill, saying on the 25th that “efforts to reveal the truth and establish fairness and common sense will continue” after the re-vote rejection of the “Special Prosecutor Act for Private First Class Chae.”

The six opposition parties, including the Democratic Party, the Fatherland Innovation Party, the Progressive Party, the New Future Party, the Basic Income Party, and the Social Democratic Party, held a rally in the Rotunda Hall of the National Assembly building to condemn the rejection of the ‘Special Prosecutor Act for Private Chae (Act on the Appointment of a Special Prosecutor to Investigate the Truth about Obstruction of the Investigation of the Deceased Marine and the Cover-up of the Case)’.

Earlier, the National Assembly held a plenary session that afternoon and put the ‘Special Prosecutor Chae Sang-byeong Act’ to a re-vote by secret ballot. The bill was rejected with 194 votes in favor, 104 votes against, and 1 invalid vote out of 299 members present.

The opposition party promised that it would not stop pushing the bill despite the rejection and would pass the expanded special prosecutor’s law. It also requested cooperation from the People Power Party led by Han Dong-hoon in passing the special prosecutor’s law.

Park Chan-dae, the Democratic Party’s floor leader and acting leader, said, “The special prosecutor’s bill has been rejected once again, but we will not stop,” adding, “We will continue to move forward until the day when the truth behind the Marine Corps soldier’s death and the suspicions of external pressure and state corruption are revealed to the public.”

Acting Chairman Park Geun-hye said, “Was the statement by People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon that he would stand with the public sentiment a lie?” and criticized, “If the People Power Party is not an accomplice in pressuring the investigation and manipulating state affairs, how could they make this choice with regard to power and public sentiment?”

Hwang Un-ha, the floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said, “We will immediately submit the ‘Yoon Seok-yeol Special Prosecutor Act’ related to the Hae-byeong Chae case to the National Assembly,” adding, “The special prosecutor’s act in question is not a special prosecutor’s act that could potentially lead to the president being investigated, but a special prosecutor’s act that targets the president.”

He continued, “If the president rejects the ‘Yoon Seok-yeol Special Prosecutor Act,’ it will constitute obstruction of justice by hindering the investigation into himself.” He added, “He must keep in mind that simply avoiding a special prosecutor does not mean he can avoid grounds for impeachment; rather, rejecting a special prosecutor is a clear ground for impeachment. I will make him regret saying, ‘I should have accepted Private First Class Chae’s special prosecutor.’”

Han Chang-min, a member of the Social Democratic Party, emphasized, “The People Power Party has put Rep. Joo Jin-woo, who should be investigated, on the podium,” and “The special prosecution of Private First Class Chae should be expanded to include the special prosecution of Ms. Kim Kun-hee and President Yoon Seok-yeol.”
