On Monday, Venezuelan judges issued an arrest warrant against Gonzalez Urrutia because of his insistence that he was the winner of the elections held in July, in which the authorities declared Maduro the winner.
The Public Prosecution said the charges against him include “using a public position”, “forging a public document”, inciting disobedience, sabotage, and “conspiracy” with organized crime and “terrorist” financing.
Gonzalez Urrutia ignored three summonses to appear before judges to investigate him on those suspicions, prompting Maduro to describe him as a “coward” and “leading a coup from his hiding place.”
Gonzalez Urrutia, the 75-year-old former ambassador, was living in an apartment, and had not appeared in public since July 30.
The United States, the European Union, and some Latin American countries refused to recognize Maduro’s victory declaration without seeing the detailed records of the voting results.
Venezuela’s Electoral Authority announced that it could not provide full details of the results, indicating a cyber attack targeting its systems. For their part, observers point out that there is no evidence of any hacking during the elections.
