Wild: “Special Prosecutor Chae Sang-byeong, Han Dong-hoon’s Case Acceptable”

On the 16th, Park Chan-dae, the acting leader and floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated regarding the “Cha Sang-byeong Special Prosecutor Act,” “The Democratic Party can also accept the third-party recommendation mentioned by Han Dong-hoon (pictured), the leader of the People Power Party,” and “(Han) should submit a third-party recommendation special prosecutor’s bill within ten days.” This is an attempt to pressure Han, who had previously stated that a third-party recommendation special prosecutor’s bill could be proposed regardless of the progress of the Senior Civil Servants’ Corruption Investigation Office investigation.
A representative responded, “We will reflect opinions inside and outside the party, such as the need to include the so-called ‘alleged tip-off operation’ in the investigation, and proceed with the necessary procedures.” This is a counterattack using the card of including the Democratic Party’s alleged tip-off operation related to the ‘alleged lobbying to save former Marine Corps 1st Division Commander Lim Seong-geun’ in the special investigation. The Blue House is taking the position that it will wait and see how the ruling and opposition parties negotiate.
Acting Chairman Park said at a Kwanhun Club debate held at the Korea Press Center on this day, “If only we can clear the name of the Marine who died in the line of duty and reveal the truth about external pressure, the Democratic Party is ready to engage in open debate and consultation,” adding, “I hope that Representative Han, as the leader of the ruling party, will keep his promise to the people and swiftly submit the (ruling party’s) special prosecutor’s bill.” Earlier, on the 9th, the Democratic Party proposed the third special prosecutor’s bill for Private First Class Chae, which targets President Yoon Seok-yeol’s wife Kim Keon-hee for investigation in connection with the “allegations of lobbying to save former division commander Lim.”
Acting Chairman Park met with reporters after the debate and said, “A week is enough time for a representative to make a decision,” and added, “If a special prosecutor bill recommending a third party is introduced around the 23rd, I think it would be good to handle it during the regular National Assembly session (in September) before the state audit in October.”
In a statement, Representative Han said, “We have consistently stated our position that we should have the Chief Justice select (the special prosecutor) and present a proper special prosecutor’s bill that eliminates unconstitutional elements that can do anything,” and expressed his intention to discuss the special prosecutor’s bill by adding the “suspicion of whistleblowing manipulation.” Representative Han then criticized, “As soon as the unconstitutional special prosecutor’s bill was blocked, the Democratic Party submitted a special prosecutor’s bill with even stronger unconstitutionality,” and “At the same time, they are showing hesitant behavior by saying that they may accept the special prosecutor’s bill proposed by the People Power Party.” A key official of the People Power Party said, “Including the suspicion of whistleblowing manipulation in the special prosecutor’s scope is an opinion that Representative Han recently gathered during a meeting with senior members,” and “The Democratic Party should accept a plan to create a special prosecutor’s bill that reflects the changing circumstances.”
An official from the Blue House met with reporters that day and said, “We will consult with the opposition party about the parts mentioned by the ruling party leader, so we will have to watch the process of policy discussions between the ruling and opposition parties before we can state our position.”
