Opposition Leader Calls for Accountability in Spy Scandal and Wildfire Management During Meeting with Greek President

by time news

On Wednesday afternoon, the President of the Party of Freedom, Zoe Konstantopoulou, had a meeting with the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, at the Presidential Palace. It is recalled that she had requested to see the President to raise issues concerning the wiretapping case, which the Supreme Court has shelved, and the government’s management of the wildfires.

“In such critical times, the opposition is more important than the government. Representing the opposition, the Party of Freedom, and the citizens, I presented to the President of the Republic the request that the council of political leaders must convene to discuss yet another cover-up, the cover-up of the wiretapping scandal. In a democracy, the political personnel, active ministers of major authority, journalists, opposition figures, and a candidate for leadership cannot be surveilled without accountability. In a democracy, it is unacceptable for half the government to be under surveillance while the judiciary assures that everything is in order,” noted Zoe Konstantopoulou as she exited the presidential palace.

She further emphasized, “the council of political leaders that must convene should examine the perennial crime of wildfires. We must speak with honesty, with respect for the victims, the citizens, the environment, the animals, the birds, all living beings, those affected. […] These issues cannot be hidden under the rug; besides, there is no institutional rug large enough to cover such serious issues. I am ready and determined to take every initiative necessary to shed ample light on the issue of the wildfires.”

In fact, Zoe Konstantopoulou later highlighted: “The citizens must learn, the Greek people must know what happened that day, on July 6, 2015, the day after the referendum when the Greek people voted 62% ‘no’ to the blackmail, and starting with the council of political leaders under President Pavlopoulos, a process of violation and overturning of the political mandate began. The political leaders at that time may not have wanted the publication of these minutes, but today they all expressed themselves positively.”

Among others, today, Zoe Konstantopoulou announced that she would also officially submit a request for the publication of the minutes of the Council of Political Leaders from July 6, 2015, a request which she officially presented to the President of the Republic on July 24, 2024.
