On the 19th (local time), the Office of the President refuted the opposition party’s claim that “there are concerns about a large-scale loss of trillions of won due to the export of the Czech nuclear power plant,” calling it “completely groundless and fake news.”
Park Chun-seop, senior presidential secretary for economic affairs who is visiting the Czech Republic with President Yoon Seok-yeol, criticized the remarks in a briefing that day, saying, “This is a fallacy aimed at disparaging the president’s efforts to create jobs and revitalize the economy by rebuilding the nuclear power ecosystem through his overseas trip.”
In a subsequent briefing, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn Deok-geun said about the suspicions of “dumping orders,” “Spreading fake news without any basis is an act that will not help future contract negotiations and is an act that harms national interests,” and “The Czech government stated that the reason it selected Korea was because it trusts its proven capabilities to adhere to the construction period and budget.” He continued to respond to the opposition party’s suspicions about deficits due to nuclear power plant exports, saying, “That is completely false,” and “The Czech government plans to independently procure funds for the construction of new nuclear power plants, and so far, there has been no request for financial cooperation from the Czech side.”
When 22 opposition lawmakers, including Democratic Party lawmakers Kim Jeong-ho and Min Hyung-bae, urged a “comprehensive reconsideration of the reckless nuclear power plant export push,” saying, “If we continue like this, we could end up incurring losses in the trillions of won and have to pour in taxpayers’ money,” they directly refuted this.
