ANALYSIS – The Canadian company is setting up in the Basque Country, where it hopes to build a factory within two years.

“The choice was between Marseille and the Basque Country.” It was finally in Anglet, between Bayonne and Biarritz, that Toby Gauld chose to set up Optima Aero, of which he is the founder and CEO. Its headquarters for Europe, Africa and the Middle East will open in early May in temporary premises. The young company from the suburbs of Montreal hopes to build in the region, within two years, a factory to dismantle old helicopters in order to recycle or resell their reconditioned parts. “We propose to extend the life of helicopters with second-hand parts, allowing their owners to save money and the industry to lower its carbon footprint by reducing the volumes of new parts”, details Toby Gauld. According to Deloitte, manufacturing represents 18% of the volumes of CO emitted by planes and helicopters throughout their life, compared to 70% during their use.
