Gilt management plays a central role in the pursuit of a stable sow population! In the gilts’ immunization strategy, we try to administer the associated vaccinations in peace and with the right care. Gilts are vaccinated against many germs today. There are various options to make it more pleasant for your sows and for yourself.

Combine vaccines
To reduce the number of injections, we can combine vaccines. Always consult your company veterinarian to ensure that the combinations have been sufficiently investigated by the vaccine manufacturer. Do not start mixing vaccines at random, because not all vaccines are suitable for this. For example, you cannot simply dissolve a live vaccine in any solvent. For example, the adjuvant of a dead vaccine can kill the live vaccine, or at least reduce its effectiveness. Vaccines with different excipients can also clot, blocking the needle and preventing the vaccine from being administered properly. These are lost costs that we want to avoid at all costs.

Needle-free vaccination
Another option to reduce needle sticks is to administer vaccines via intradermal needleless vaccination. Thanks to this administration with the injection device the Hipradermic® the animals remain much calmer and this gives more pleasure in working in the barn. Intradermal needle-free vaccination of sows can be done in the neck, next to the vulva (blade) or at the height of the udder. This method of administration offers many advantages: it is faster and it is safer because no needles can break off. Needle stick injuries are also avoided and diseases cannot be transmitted through the needle. All this benefits animal welfare. Read all about it our folder!
