During work hours, we sometimes neglect our oral health.

In order not to suffer complications derived from not brushing after meals, dehydration and unhealthy snacks, Sanitas dentist Lorena Trinidad, in an interview with EFEsalud, offers us advice for taking care of our mouth.

What happens if I neglect it?

First of all, the doctor reminds us that the most common complications of neglecting our oral health at work are cavities, gingivitis and even periodontal disease.

By not brushing our teeth during working hours, especially when we eat there, tartar can form that accumulates and causes these pathologies.

Main recommendations

Snacks saludables: When we want to have something between meals, it is recommended to replace processed foods with nuts, vegetables or fruits. For example, apple or pear not only provide satiety naturally, but also help eliminate food debris while cleaning teeth.

Drinking water: Dehydration and dryness worsen our oral health, since saliva acts as a natural protector for our teeth.

Brush your teeth after every meal: It is important to brush your teeth after each meal. Especially for lunch, which usually coincides with being away from home, it is very useful to bring a kit with the basic elements for oral hygiene to the office.

Avoid foods with high sugar content: Sugary products are a terrible option if you want to maintain proper oral hygiene. Furthermore, if you cannot brush your teeth afterwards, this considerably increases the risk of cavities.

Other dental work complications

In addition to neglecting oral hygiene at work, there are other reasons associated with it that can deteriorate our oral health.

Stress can cause bruxism. This disorder causes us to clench our teeth and grind them, which also damages our oral health and gums.

“Logically when we are stressed, we don’t sleep well. Many times this affects patients who have a nervous habit in the form of bruxism,” says the dentist.

Take care of rest

Dr. Lorena Trinidad warns that to take care of our oral health at work, we must also have good habits.

To begin with, it emphasizes the importance of a good rest. “We have to establish sleep education,” he says, “we don’t sleep at the same time every day.”

Also, remember that stress derived from work and lack of rest can not only affect our teeth, but also affects our gums. Hormonal changes and a nervous habit can cause gingivitis, that is, inflammation of the gums.

Lastly, since Sanitas They recommend going to the dentist at least once a year for a routine check-up. In the case of patients with bruxism problems or diagnosed periodontal disease, further consultations may be necessary.

If you suffer from a disorder such as diabetes or asthma, it is also better to go to the dentist several times a year, since certain drugs can alter our oral health.
