Ukraine, Putin: “Orban’s visit attempts to restore communication with the EU”
Russia sees Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s visit to Moscow as an attempt to restore dialogue with the European Union and give it further impetus. This is what Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the end of their conversation in the Kremlin. “We see this (Orban’s arrival in Moscow) as an attempt to restore the issue (with the EU) and give it further strength,” he said.
In their conversation, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Russian President Vladimir Putin also spoke about “possible security in Europe”. Putin himself said this at a press conference, reported Tass. Orban “explains the West’s point of view in general” and Russia is “thankful” for him “trying to re-establish a dialogue”, Putin added. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said he had been informed in advance of Orban’s visit, while the EU said it was not aware of it.
Putin rejected the ceasefire call
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban asked Russian President Vladimir Putin for a concession in Ukraine to facilitate the opening of negotiations, but Putin replied that he was against it because Russia wanted “a full and complete end to the conflict”. Putin himself said this at a joint press conference, reported by Ria Novosti.
Putin: “Frank and practical communication”
The interview with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was “truthful and useful”. Russian President Vladimir Putin said this during a joint press conference. “Russia and Hungary continue dialogue in the current difficult geopolitical situation, this is important,” Putin added, quoted by the Ria Novosti agency.
During a press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Russian President Vladimir Putin also said that for Moscow one of the conditions for ending the conflict is the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the territories claimed by Russia. This is reported by Tass.
“For Europe, peace is the most important thing. We believe that the first decision of the next six months of our president is the fight for peace”: this was said by the Hungarian President Vitktor Orban at the end of the talks in Moscow with the President Russia Vladimir Putin.
Stoltenberg: “Orban warned us about his trip to Moscow”
“Orban told us about this visit to Moscow and I hope that when he is in Washington, there will be a way to discuss this trip, which takes place on the basis of two conversations.” Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said this, specifying that during his visit to Hungary he also discussed his visit to Kiev with the Hungarian Prime Minister. “Orban does not represent NATO in Russia”, he insisted, however.
Orban from Putin, “mission of peace”; Kremlin, “Ukraine on the agenda”
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced that he was in Moscow to “continue his peace mission”, after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev on July 2. Orban himself denied it on X by posting a picture of the arrival at the airport Vnukovo airport in Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov meanwhile confirmed Orban’s talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin today. “Ukraine is also among the topics on the agenda,” the spokesman reported.
Ukraine: Orban, my commitment to peace even without an EU mandate
“We cannot achieve peace by sitting comfortably on the couches in Brussels. Even if the EU President does not have the authority to negotiate on behalf of the EU, we cannot sit back and wait for the war to end in a miracle. The necessary instrument to take steps first to peace This is the reason for our peace mission,” he wrote on X.
Tajani, Orban from Putin? This doesn’t seem like a time for visits
“Orban? He went to Moscow as Hungarian president, I don’t think it’s time to go to Russia but everyone does what they want. The European Union is for peace but not for obedience to Putin: it must be peace, not submit. Putin’s advice is useless, dialogue and discussion are welcome but we will continue to help Ukraine,” said Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani at the Forza Italia press conference, commenting on Viktor Orban’s visit to Russia.
Ukraine: Borrell, Orban do not represent the EU in any way
“The visit of Prime Minister Viktor Orba’n to Moscow took place exclusively within the framework of bilateral relations between Hungary and Russia.” “Orba’n did not receive any authorization from the EU Council to go to Moscow. The EU’s position on Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine is reflected in several decisions of the European Council. This situation excludes official contacts between the EU and President Putin. Therefore the Hungarian Prime Minister does not represent the EU in any form.” Here is a statement by the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell. “Hungary is now the EU member state that holds the rotating presidency of the Council until 31 December 2024. This does not mean any external representation of the Union, which is the responsibility of the President of the European Council of the Heads of Country or Government and of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy at ministerial level”, he explained. “Also, it is worth mentioning that President Putin has been charged by the International Criminal Court and an arrest warrant has been issued for his role in relation to the transfer of children from Ukraine to Russia”, adds the head of European diplomacy.
Ukraine: EU, Orban’s visit in favor of Putin is not peaceful
“We do not want peace with Moscow. We want a fair and complete peace for Ukraine. For this reason we believe that a trip to Moscow works more in favor of Vladimir Putin than in favor of real and lasting peace”. This was said by the spokesperson of the European Commission, Eric Mamer, about the visit of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, to Moscow.
Ukraine: EU, Orban’s visit undermines unity; we are not given
“It is clear that whatever the message about the report from Prime Minister Orban, the object of this visit is not the right one. The end of this war.” “We were never told about the visit, it was not coordinated with us or with anyone else that I know,” he added.
Ukraine: Scholz on Orban in Moscow, EU support will continue
The German President, Olaf Scholz, has promised that the European Union’s support for Ukraine will not weaken despite the controversial trip to Moscow of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, whose country is the rotating President of the EU. Orban did not represent the EU during the visit, Scholz said, stressing that “the clear message from the group is that Ukraine can count on our trust, which Putin cannot.”
Ukraine: EU, Council Visit to Budapest is now in doubt
“This visit to Moscow essentially questions the traditional visit of the President of the Council to Hungary – for the Transitional President – which has been planned immediately after the summer vacation.” This was said by the spokesman of the European Commission, Eric Mamer, about the trip of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, to Moscow “Orban said that he did not have an order. But the symbolism is clear. This trip took place five days after the inauguration of the Hungarian presidency,” he added.
