HONG KONG SAR – On 21 October 2026, the international sight-saving organization Orbis, in partnership with the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society (HKOS), Southern District Office, and Southern District Services & Community Care Teams, launched the Southern District Eye Care Day
at Wah Kwai Community Hall in Aberdeen to mark World Sight Day. The event aimed to promote early eye disease prevention and intergenerational care for seniors, emphasizing the importance of regular screenings and family support.
The full-day initiative combined medical expertise, government support, and community engagement. It featured interactive sensory games, medical seminars, and free eye screenings. Attendees experienced AR eye disease simulations and Braille challenges, while HKOS specialist ophthalmologists provided free comprehensive consultations and OCT scan evaluations for underprivileged seniors. Over 160 participants, including seniors, residents, and family members, gathered to advocate for Early Screening, Early Control
and Intergenerational Care.
Engaging Communities and Advocating for Eye Health
Orbis Sight Ambassador
Ms. HUI Sze Man, a senior artiste, shared her personal experience of overcoming cataracts through regular checkups, urging seniors to seek timely care. My five grandchildren are always caring for my eyes,
she said. I strongly urge fellow seniors not to endure vision problems silently.
The event also featured a ceremonial kick-off where officials and community leaders placed colorful “E” props on a giant eye chart, symbolizing collective commitment to eye health.

The event concluded with a focus on raising awareness about age-related eye conditions and encouraging younger generations to accompany seniors for checkups. Attendees left with a renewed understanding of how simple actions—like a gentle reminder or a visit to an ophthalmologist—could preserve vision and dignity.
