The High Court in Madurai has fined LIC Rs. 2 lakh for concealing the truth in court. Karthikeyan, a clerk who joined LIC in 1984, had originally provided a genuine caste certificate when he started working. However, when he was promoted, LIC sent a letter requesting verification of his caste certificate to the State SC, ST Caste Certificate Verification Committee, which was rejected. LIC then filed a petition in the High Court seeking to quash the order and have the certificate verified again. The Court confirmed the authenticity of Karthikeyan’s caste certificate, stating that once verified, it should not be questioned again. The Court also found that LIC had concealed the fact that the authenticity of the certificate had previously been confirmed in 1990, and imposed a fine of Rs. 2 lakh. The money will be donated to the Chennai Cancer Research Centre, and Karthikeyan will receive all due retirement benefits within four weeks.

Madurai: The High Court has imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on LIC for concealing the truth in the court.

Karthikeyan hails from Sivakasi. He joined LIC in 1984 as a clerk. At that time, Nellie had given the caste certificate issued by the revenue officials in 1982. The LIC has asked the Nellie District Collector to examine the authenticity of the caste certificate. Later on 20.4.1990 the Collector of Nellai reported that the caste certificate of Karthikeyan was genuine.

In this case, when Karthikeyan was promoted, LIC sent a letter to the State SC, ST Caste Certificate Verification Committee to verify the authenticity of his caste certificate. This was rejected by the State Caste Certificate Verification Committee. In this case, the LIC Madurai Zonal Senior Manager filed a petition in the High Court branch seeking to quash the order issued by the State Caste Certificate Verification Committee in 2019 refusing to examine the veracity of Karthikeyan’s caste certificate and seeking an order to examine the veracity of the caste certificate and submit a report.

The bench of Justices R.Subramanian and L.Victoria Gowri heard this petition and issued the order: “The authenticity of Karthikeyan’s caste certificate has been confirmed. Once the caste certificate has been verified, it should not be bothered in the name of having to verify the caste certificate again and again. Karthikeyan’s caste proof was verified in 1990. LIC has concealed this fact in the case.

LIC is a reputable company. The company has concealed the truth in court. LIC is fined Rs.2 lakh for this. This money should be given to Chennai Cancer Research Centre. This amount can be collected from the authorities who prepared the affidavit of the case. Karthikeyan should be given all the retirement benefits due in 4 weeks,” the judge said in the verdict.
