Bangladesh Bank has ordered to freeze the bank accounts of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s former personal assistant Jahangir Alam and his wife Kamrun Nahar and their related institutions. Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has directed all the banking and financial institutions to send all the information of their accounts within the next five days.

BFIU issued instructions to bank financial institutions on Sunday (July 14) saying that if there is any account in the name of the institution owned by Jahangir and his wife, the instruction has been given to suspend for the next 30 days. Besides, instructions have been given to send the KYC, account opening form, up-to-date transaction information of the accounts opened in the name of these individuals and their owned organizations to the BFIU within the next five working days.

It is to be noted that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina answered a question from reporters at a press conference on Sunday, ‘Peon has worked in my house, he now owns Tk 400 crore. Can’t go without a helicopter. This is real. How did you make this money? When I came to know, I took action by seizing the card excluding him. It happens. They come into view after catching. Besides, it doesn’t happen. Whenever caught, we are not in action. ‘

However, the Prime Minister did not mention anyone’s name. Discussion and criticism started after the press conference, after which the name of the Prime Minister’s former personal assistant Jahangir appeared in the media. After that, Bangladesh Bank has given instructions asking for all transaction information including freezing his account.
