Reuters news agency confirmed late Saturday that local protesters have partially closed the Sharara oil field in Libya, according to what it quoted from two field engineers.

In the same context, the American Bloomberg network confirmed that production in the Sharara field decreased to 230 thousand barrels per day.

Bloomberg added that the closure came after field operators received orders last night to begin a partial shutdown of production, citing three sources who said they had direct knowledge of the operations and asked not to be named.

Sources for Libya Al-Ahrar channel confirmed that Saddam, son of Khalifa Haftar, issued orders to close the Sharara oil field, which is operated by the Spanish company Repsol, after he was informed of an arrest warrant issued against him while returning to Libya from the Italian capital, Rome.

The sources explained that the Italian authorities informed Saddam Haftar that there was an arrest warrant and a circular issued against him by the Spanish authorities, due to his involvement in smuggling a shipment of weapons that had been stopped by the Spanish police several months ago.

The same sources said that Western and local attempts have already begun to pressure Spain to cancel the arrest warrant issued against Saddam Haftar, with the aim of resuming work in the Sharara oil field, which is one of the most important oil fields in Libya, with a production of more than 350 thousand barrels per day.

Last summer, Haftar’s forces had instigated the closure of the Sharara field, after Spanish police confiscated military equipment and weapons that were heading to the UAE and then to eastern Libya, according to the newspaper “Crona Global Español.”

The newspaper explained at the time that Saddam Haftar was able to obtain licenses to transport goods and commercial materials from Spain to the Emirates, but the Spanish police discovered that the shipment consisted of weapons and military equipment.
