Organ and tissue transplants increased by 43% in the Mexican Social Security Institutewhich is why this health institution reaffirmed its leadership in donation, despite facing the covid-19 pandemic.

The owner of the Coordination of Organ, Tissue and Cell Donation and Transplantation From IMSS, José Arturo Velázquez García highlighted that between 2019 to date, 5,708 multi-organ and tissue donations were made, compared to the 2012-2018 period, where 3,999 donations were recorded.

During Zoe Robledo’s administration at the head of the IMSS, 13,689 total transplants have been performed, Of which 6,250 were kidney transplants5,394 cornea transplants, 1,597 hematopoietic stem cell transplants, 339 liver transplants, 105 heart transplants, and four lung transplants.

It is worth mentioning that, the National Transplant Center (CENATRA)a government agency that regulates and monitors transplants performed in our country, recognized Social Security as the institution with the highest productivity in both donation and transplantation over the last five years.

Meanwhile, Dr. Velázquez García highlighted that during this administration six transplant programs were consolidated that are divided into 56 active programs in 10 Secondary Care Hospitals and 46 High Specialty Medical Units.
