Every day between three and four multi-organ donations are registered in different national institutions.
Organ transplants in Mexico reached record numbers that already exceeded those recorded before the pandemic but more are still required.
Currently alone there are 20,154 people waiting for an organ, of which 16,342 require a kidney.

Los Organ transplants are of great relevance for Mexico although unfortunately it is a topic that causes disinterest in a large part of the population. Although it is a practice that saves lives and improves the conditions of thousands of people, to date the number of donations remains quite low compared to other countries.

Now, according to the general director of the National Transplant Center (Cenatra), José Salvador Aburto Morales, during the first half of 2023, historic figures were achieved. He stated that there was an increase of 216 percent in the number of heart transplants and 44 percent in liver transplants compared to the same period in 2019 (pre-pandemic).

He mentioned that currently between three and four multi-organ donations are registered every day in different institutions, the majority in the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS)and this is possible due to the daily work of the health teams.

How many people require an organ transplant in Mexico?

He recognized that, even with these advances, the gap between what is done and what is needed in terms of transplants is very wide. Currently alone there are 20,154 people waiting for an organ in the country, of which 16,342 require a kidney.

This figure is lower than that recorded in previous years and is due to the reactivation of the organ donation and transplant program throughout Mexico after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The director of Cenatra pointed out that to continue advancing, the State policy on donation and transplants must be strengthened, aimed at universal coverage with medicines, specialized services, human resources, infrastructure and supplies to have the capacity to respond to the donation processes.

In turn, the head of the National Medical Coordination Unit of the Ministry of Health, Jazmy Jyhan Laborie Nassar, said that it is essential to modify individual and community behavior regarding health care. There are conditions that can be preventable but when they develop they damage different organs, the only alternative for cure is a transplant.

Likewise, he highlighted that in Mexico organ and tissue transplants are carried out with high standards of social justice. The general criteria on which this work revolves include medical urgency, therapeutic benefit, medical characteristics of the recipient and waiting time.

The general director of the Hospital Juárez de México (HJM), Gustavo Esteban Lugo Zamudio, announced that starting in the coming weeks this hospital will begin performing liver transplants.

He highlighted the contributions made by the HJM, through the reactivation of the transplant programs 18 months ago. This has allowed the performance of five multi-organ transplants, 69 kidney transplants, 11 bone marrow transplants and 22 cornea transplants.
