At a time when Greek wages are being reduced, the economic newspaper “Handelsblatt” helps to understand the German assessment that they remain excessive. In a recent article, the economic newspaper fully interprets the German mentality, as Germans seem to be capable of finding alternative reward policies.

In 2007, the insurance company Hamburg Mannheimer International, now part of the international insurance company ERGO, the second largest German insurance company, organized a party in the Hungarian Gellert baths to reward its best insurers and biggest customers. A day at the baths of Old Buda might sound like ideal fun for boring underwriters and middling policyholders, but these underwriters weren’t boring and their fun was certainly not ideal.

The company party was attended by 20 extradited women who, apparently obeying the German quest for perfect organization, wore color-coded bracelets. Ordinary hostesses wore red, girls who were there for more special reasons wore yellow, while those reserved for the special reasons of the best salesmen and customers wore white. In the area there were also various beds with curtains, where those who wanted could go to celebrate the success of the company with more discretion. Each girl had to record how many times she had been in one of these beds by adding a stamp to her hand.

After the party, the company’s magazine referred to it, talking about the incredible fun it provided, but without photos, as guests were screened at the entrance to keep cameras out of the bathroom area. Possible violations of the confidentiality of the celebration were threatened with corporate penalties.

ERGO notes that the initiators of the party no longer work for the company, although some of their guests note that several other executives, who were at it, remain its employees.
