The European Center for Infection Control (ECDC) is issuing a warning regarding the transfer of cases of Oropouche fever to Europe. This virus was carried by tourists who traveled to Cuba and were bitten by insects that carried the virus.
The confirmed cases, specifically three, were found in Italy and the same number in Spain. One of the patients was hospitalized. Now everyone is in good health.
What is Oropouche fever
Speaking to Action 24, EKPA professor of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Theodora Psaltopoulou, said it is a virus transmitted by mosquito bites. He clarified, however, that these insects do not exist in Europe and that the virus is not transmitted from person to person.
The symptoms
In terms of symptoms, they are fever, headache, possibly gastrointestinal symptoms, arthralgias, myalgias and in very rare cases a problem from the nervous system, such as meningitis. He stressed, however, that no death had been reported.
Who is at risk?
Psaltopoulou sent Ms. emphasizing that it currently only applies to travelers coming from Cuba or other Latin American countries, who then come to Europe.
Is there a cure?
When asked if there is a cure for Oropouche fever, the professor said no, saying that there is no specific antiviral drug or vaccination, so there is nothing we can do to prevent the virus.
