San Juan’s 2026 Summer Colonies Program Concludes, Impacting Over 25,000 Residents

The 2026 Summer Colonies program in San Juan province is set to conclude on January 30, having provided recreation, learning, and vital economic opportunities for over 25,000 residents this year. The program’s success underscores a commitment to social inclusion and intergenerational connection within the region.

A Province-Wide Initiative

The governor of San Juan province recently visited the department of Santa LucΓa to observe the program in action and acknowledge the contributions of participants and staff. Accompanied by local officials, including the mayor of Santa LucΓa, Juan JosΓ© Orrego, and ministers of Family and Human Development, Carlos Platero, and Education, Silvia Fuentes, the governor toured various activity sectors catering to children, individuals with disabilities, and senior citizens.

β€œBeing here today, celebrating another year of life surrounded by the energy of our children and the respect of our elders, is the best gift,” the governor stated. β€œThese neighborhoods are not just a place of recreation, they are the heart of San Juan beating with equality and opportunities for all.”

Economic and Social Engine

Beyond its recreational benefits, the Summer Colonies program has emerged as a significant economic driver for San Juan. This year alone, the initiative created over 3,000 jobs, encompassing roles such as teachers, instructors, lifeguards, and kitchen staff.

A key focus of the program has been labor inclusion, with the number of individuals with disabilities employed by the program doubling from 2025 to 30 this year. This increase is attributed to the positive outcomes observed in the previous year’s implementation.

Furthermore, the program prioritizes the health and nutritional needs of participants, providing adapted meals for individuals with celiac disease, diabetes, and allergies, alongside dental check-ups and vaccination campaigns.

Diverse Activities Across 92 Locations

The activities offered within the Summer Colonies program are extensive, taking place across 92 locations throughout the province, operating from Tuesday to Friday. Offerings range from traditional sports like swimming, football, hockey, and volleyball, to more specialized pursuits such as chess, martial arts, folk dance, and recycling workshops.

For senior citizens, the program provides a dedicated space for well-being, featuring activities like aquagym, dance therapy, and cognitive stimulation. This focus on intergenerational integration is a cornerstone of the current administration’s policies, embodied in the β€œRenacer” program.

A Successful Conclusion

As the 2026 Summer Colonies program prepares for its closure this Friday, January 30, officials express confidence that it has successfully fulfilled its objective of providing a safe, enriching, and joyful experience for families across San Juan province. The program stands as a testament to the power of community-based initiatives in fostering social cohesion and economic opportunity.
