The skyscraper granary of 14th century Florence comes back to new life. The Orsanmichele complex halfway between the Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio – as if to represent its first civil and then religious role – reopens after 400 days with new restorations and layouts. Orsanmichele was born as a lodge for the sale of grain with two warehouse floors. In 1347 the Florentines brought us the Madonna delle Grazie by Bernardo Daddi which was soon protected by the Tabernacle of Orcagna. The barn closes and is transformed into a church. Today the thirteen wonderful statues – works by the greatest Renaissance sculptors including Ghiberti, Donatello, Andrea del Verrocchio, Baccio da Montelupo, Giambologna – which adorned the external niches of the building return to meet the gaze of visitors at the height desired by the artists . On the occasion of the reopening of the Orsanmichele complex, Paola D’Agostino, outgoing director of the Bargello Museums, announced that Massimo Osanna, general director of Museums of the Ministry of Culture, will assume the interim direction of the Bargello Museums of which Orsanmichele is part.
