The regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo withdrew this Tuesday the consent that it had granted to the new ambassador of the European Union (EU) in Nicaragua, Fernando Ponz Cantó, after the regional organization issued a statement in which he reiterated his support for a “democratic, peaceful and negotiated” solution to the sociopolitical crisis that Nicaragua has been experiencing for the past five years.

“Given your interventionist, daring and insolent statement of this day, which ratifies the imperialist and colonialist positions that characterize the European Union, this April 18, on the eve of the National Day of Peace, the Government of Nicaragua has decided to suspend the placet that had been granted to Mr. Fernando Ponz, as ambassador of that overwhelming power”, reported the regime in a letter signed by the foreign minister Denis Moncada Colindres.

The EU issued its note on April 18, on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the start of a series of peaceful demonstrations in which thousands of Nicaraguans protested controversial reforms to Social Security, which later became a demand for Ortega’s resignation. after responding with the force of paramilitaries and police. “On this sad anniversary, the EU confirms its willingness to support all efforts aimed at a democratic, peaceful and negotiated solution to the protracted political crisis in Nicaragua,” said the spokesman for the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, in the statement. Josep Borrell.

In the letter sent by the dictatorship to the EU Foreign Affairs Office, based in Brussels, Moncada Colindres stated that “in these circumstances and in the face of the permanent siege of our people’s right to national sovereignty, we will not receive their representative ”.

In the letter, the Nicaraguan regime also reiterated “to the neocolonialist gentlemen of the European Union, our condemnation of all their historical genocide, and we demand justice and reparation against these crimes against humanity and their virulent, greedy and rapacious looting of our own wealth and culture.

The statement of the European Union, For his part, he stressed that this block of countries “has systematically condemned” the repression of the Ortega regime against the protesters and “repeatedly called for the release of all political prisoners, the full return to the rule of law and the return of international organizations of human rights to the country.

The repression of the regime turned into a massacre that left at least 355 dead, almost two thousand injured, and the establishment of a police state in which civil and democratic liberties were dissolved by the dictatorship.

“The EU has regularly encouraged the Government of Nicaragua to engage in a genuine and inclusive dialogue with the Nicaraguan people on their legitimate demands,” said the spokesman for the head of European diplomacy.

Ponz would replace the expelled ambassador

The EU recalled that five years have passed “since thousands of Nicaraguan citizens took to the streets to express their legitimate demands for human rights, in particular civil and political rights, and for the return of democracy. Instead of having their demands heard and respected, the Nicaraguan people have faced systemic repression ever since.”

Fernando Ponz was appointed by the EU to replace the ambassador Bettina Muscheidtexpelled in September 2022 after being declared not gratefulunder the allegation of alleged “constant interference and disrespect for national sovereignty” by the European bloc.

The expulsion of Ambassador Muscheidt occurred after on September 26, 2022, the delegation of the European Union before the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council, urged the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo to “return the sovereignty of Nicaragua to the Nicaraguan people” and to “restore democracy” in the country, where the human rights of the population are systematically violated.

“The EU urges the Nicaraguan authorities to fulfill their own commitments, the Nicaraguan Constitution and international human rights laws and regulations,” they said in their speech.

The political and social crisis in Nicaragua worsened after the electoral farce of November 7, 2021, in which Ortega was re-elected for a fifth term, fourth in a row and second with his wife, Rosario Murillo, as vice president, elections that were held without transparency and political competition, after the regime imprisoned seven presidential candidates and the main figures of the opposition leadership.
