Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra: A Century of Musical Excellence
The Osaka Shion wind Orchestra boasts the longest history and tradition of any symphonic wind orchestra in Japan. Established in 1923, the orchestra marked its 100th anniversary in June 2023 and became privately owned by Osaka City in 2014. Since then, the orchestra has continued its mission to enrich musical culture through diverse activities, including concerts, wind band classes, and recordings. The orchestra’s dedication has been recognized with numerous accolades, including three Osaka Cultural Festival Awards, the Japan Commercial Broadcasting Federation Award, and the Osaka Arts Award. Currently serving as the Osaka/Kansai Expo PR supplier, the orchestra continues to be a vital part of the region’s cultural landscape.
Akira Miyagawa: A Composer of Diverse Talents
Leading the concert will be conductor Akira Miyagawa, a prolific composer whose work spans a remarkable range of media. Miyagawa’s career began with stage music for productions like those of the Shiki Theater Company and Tokyo Disneyland, and he has as garnered critical acclaim, including the yomiuri Theater Award’s Outstanding Staff Award for works such as “Shidokumaru,” “Hamlet,” and “Shakespeare of Tenpo Twelve Years.” His compositions, including the hit song “matsuken Samba II,” have resonated with audiences nationwide.
Miyagawa’s influence extends to television, anime, and orchestral works. He currently contributes music to NHK’s “quintet,” BS2’s “Doremifa Wonderland,” and BS Premium’s “Akira Miyagawa’s Showtime,” and has also composed scores for popular anime series like “Kirby” and “Space Battleship Yamato 2199/2202,” as well as the NHK special drama “Idol.” He published his essay collection, “Akira-san is a genius who enjoys music,” in 2022, further solidifying his position as a leading figure in Japanese music.

The family concert will begin at 3:00 PM on January 12, 2026, with doors opening at 2:00 PM. The event will be held at the Grand Cube Osaka Main Hall, located at 5-3-51 Nakanoshima, Kita-ku, Osaka.
Admission is free, but due to anticipated high demand, attendance will be steadfast by a strict lottery system. Applications must be submitted by december 16, 2025. Applicants are required to specify the number of attendees (up to four peopel), along with their names and ages. A minimum of one child under junior high school age and one guardian over 18 years old are required per application.
Applicants will be notified of the lottery results via postcard after December 23, 2025. Those selected will receive an invitation postcard, which must be presented for entry. To ensure equitable access, organizers request that individuals submit only one application, even if attending with others. Personal information collected will be used solely for invitation delivery and duplicate application verification, and will be disposed of immediatly following the performance.
