State Sanitary Works (OSE) resolved to prohibit “the use of drinking water for non-priority purposes”, as a response to the growing water crisis that Uruguay is experiencing and that does not seem to envision an end in the short term. Thus, the following activities are prohibited: irrigation, washing of sidewalks and outdoor patios, washing of vehicles by individuals and filling of swimming pools, as established in an official statement published this Friday the 10th on the website of the state agency.

The ban will come into effect as of January 11, 2023, and covers the following locations:

OSE informs that it will put “duly identified personnel on the street to monitor compliance with the measures, who will leave a written record of the facts verified and the summons made.”

“Also, across the line 0800 1871 Complaints of non-compliance with these measures will be received,” adds OSE.

“The lack of rainfall has exacerbated the situation, causing a continuous decrease in the reservoirs and courses that are used as a source of supply, which forces the Administration to introduce additional measures regarding the use of this vital element,” the document adds.

Finally, OSE informs that “it will be in permanent communication with the population through the Communication Management, the local offices and the Call Center units (0800 1871)”.
