Ostapenko, seeded eighth in the tournament, who is ranked 17th in the WTA, defeated Freh (WTA 24th) 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the first round match.
Ostapenko started the match unsuccessfully, losing the first two games of her serve and trailing 0-4. In the continuation, Latvia’s best tennis player improved her game and got closer to 4-5, but she failed to save the first set.
From the beginning of the second set, Ostapenko dominated the court, allowing the Polish woman to win only two of the next 14 games – winning sets 6-1 and 6-1.
In the second round, Ostapenko will meet American Madison Keys (WTA 20th), who defeated Brazilian Beatriz Haddad-Maya (WTA 16th) 6-2, 6-1 in the first match.
So far, Ostapenko has met the American tennis player five times and won two victories, including the last mutual match in February 2023 in the first round of the Doha “WTA 500”, in which she won 7-5, 6-2.
The winner of the match between Ostapenko and Keys will meet the host Emerson Jones (WTA 371) or the third-seeded Russian Daria Kasatkina (WTA 9) in the quarterfinals.
For reaching the second round, or round of 16, Ostapenko earned 60 points in the WTA ranking.
It has already been reported that in the doubles competition, Ostapenko was seeded as the first seed in a pair with Taiwanese Suwei Xie, but on Monday she lost to the American duo Ashlyn Krieger and Jessica Pegula 3-6, 5-7 in the first round.
Competitions in Adelaide are held on hard surfaces.
