It is already known how hot Brazil – Argentina tends to be. The rivalry is gigantic, one of the biggest (if not the biggest) in the world of football. But nothing justifies violence to the point of leaving football itself to the background.
That’s what happened at Maracanã. The violence in the stands of the historic stadium began even before the opening whistle (at the time of the anthems) and caused the match to start half an hour late, with Argentina even leaving the pitch.
Players from both sides tried to calm tempers in the face of the clashes, but it did little to help, as with police intervention the violence ended up escalating until a police cordon was formed to isolate the Argentine fans.

There was no way to escape the scenes that preceded the South American Superclásico, but there was also the kind of football that everyone likes: football. And then, at the end of the 90 minutes, Argentina beat (0-1), with Otamendi deciding.
The Benfica captain was the only one of the Portuguese club representatives to be a starter (Pepê and Di María started on the bench) and ended up making history: it was the first time that Brazil lost at Maracanã in games counting towards qualifying for the World Cup. .
The match was very divided and disputed, with Brazil and Argentina sharing periods of greater power and dominance. The only goal of the match came after the hour, with Otamendi heading past Alisson and worsening Brazil’s results crisis.
Canarinha is now sixth (!!!) and has now played four consecutive games without winning, the last three of which were defeats.
