The Government of India has once again prepared to rein in the sexual content being shown on OTT. In this regard, a notice has been served to the leading OTT platform Netflix. The Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has issued a summon to Netflix and asked it to appear on July 29. In this summons, the easy access of minors to the sexual content being shown on Netflix has been made an issue. This is a violation of the POCSO Act 2012. The Commission says that in the beginning of June last month, a letter was written to the OTT platform in this regard, to which no response was received. Between 2018 and 2024, many OTT platforms streamed B-grade web series. Many of these fall under the category of soft porn. In the case, the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court implemented the rules of regulation on OTT. The Government of India now monitors online content under the Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code Rules, 2021. According to reports, the commission has summoned officials of Netflix under Section 14 of the CPCR Act 2005 and asked them to appear on July 29.
If there is no self regulation then the government can block
The government encourages OTT platforms to self-regulate. Under this, OTT platforms classify their content. They give them age ratings. But if this does not happen, then under Section 67, 67A and 67B, the government has the right to block or ban the objectionable content being streamed.
OTT market increased in India during Corona period
Netflix launched its app video streaming service for the first time in the year 2007. This company once used to make and sell CDs/DVDs of original content. In the year 2021, seeing the increasing impact of web series and original content, the company spent Rs 1.35 lakh crore on it. During the Corona epidemic in the year 2020, the influence of OTT platforms increased the most in India. According to a report, these platforms got 13% more views during the Corona period as compared to the last three months of 2019.

Currently Netflix has around 1.20 crore subscribers in the country
According to a report by ‘Invest India’, during the Corona period, the time spent by users on major OTT platforms like ‘Amazon Prime Video’, ‘Netflix’ and ‘Disney Plus Hotstar’ increased by 82.63%. According to another report, there are currently 57 OTT platforms in India, which have more than 45 crore subscribers. According to a report by ‘Economic Times’, Netflix has 12 million i.e. 1.20 crore subscribers in the country.
