The Russian women’s junior basketball team, thanks to the silver medal at the Euro Challenger tournament, was one of the participants in the upcoming U-17 world championship in 2022.

Euro Challenger is a new addition to the continental calendar for reserve teams. Due to the ongoing pandemic, it was decided not to hold the Old World Championships (they are annual), where, for example, 16 teams in the top division gather in one place at once. The elite circle, however, has expanded to 18 teams in each of the three ages – senior, middle and junior. But the participants are divided into three sixes and perform in different cities in such a limited composition according to the requirements and realities of the present time.

If in two categories the winners and prize-winners of these groups simply received the corresponding awards, then among the youngest the Eurochallenger, which ended on the weekend, became the selection for the U-17 World Championship. In each of the three tournaments, according to the results of one-round competitions, it was necessary to get into the strongest two. The Russians have completed this task!

Our team, led by head coach Olga Shuneikina, played in the top six “C” in the Portuguese city of Matosinhos. The girls started with a defeat from Slovenia (60:66), and then won four wins in a row. The Russians consistently beat Portugal (66:43), Belgium (55:47), Poland (65:58) and the Czech Republic (89:72). The final position is as follows: Slovenia – 5 wins – 0 defeats, Russia – 4-1, Belgium – 3-2, Portugal – 1-4, Poland – 1-4, Czech Republic – 1-4.

That is, at the 2022 World Cup, the company of Russia will again be made up of Slovenes. Parallel to group “C” tournaments ended in two other sixes. In the capital of Finland, Helsinki, France and Germany are in the top 2. And in the Spanish town of San Fernando, the team of the host country of the mini-tournament and Serbia distinguished themselves.

The Russian national team in Portugal played in the following composition:

Point guard and attacking defenders – Alexandra Eliseeva (Sports School “Gloria” named after Yu.I. Biryukov, Moscow), Anastasia Kovaleva (UOR No. 4 named after A.Ya. Gomelsky, Moscow), Alexandra Panchenko (UOR No. 3, Vidnoe, Moskovskaya region.);

Olga Shuneikinoy was assisted by coaches Olga Doronina, Vasily Prokofiev, Yegor Rozhkov in her work with the team.

The 2022 World Cup is planned to be held in the Hungarian city of Debrecen, no specific dates have been set. The tournament is held once in a two-year cycle, starting in 2010. However, in 2020, due to the pandemic, the competition in Romania had to be canceled.
