Our judokas, who won a historic victory at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, have returned to their homeland.

As reported by İdman.biz, Olympic champions Hidayat Heydarov (73 kg) and Zelim Kotsoyev (100 kg) were met at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport by representatives of the Azerbaijan Judo Federation, the sports community, fans and family members.

Geydarov, who started the Olympics in the 1/8 finals, defeated Israeli athlete Tohar Boutbul in the first match, and Canadian Arthur Margelidon by ippon in the 1/4 finals. He won the title of Olympic champion by defeating Kosovo’s Akil Gjakov in the semi-finals and Frenchman John Benjamin Gabu in the finals.

Zelim Kotsoev, who started the competition from the 1/8 final stage, met Pole Piotr Kuchera in the first match. Our European and World Champion, who defeated his opponent by ippon, advanced to the 1/4 finals, where he defeated Israeli representative Peter Palchik. Here he defeated Uzbek Muzaffarbek Turoboev by waze-ari and advanced to the final. In the final match, our representative defeated Georgian Ilia Sulamanidze by ippon and became the Olympic champion.

It should be noted that the last time the Azerbaijani judo team won a gold medal was at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. This was achieved by Elnur Mammadli (73 kg).
