President Gustavo Petro highlighted the importance of clean energy for the economic and social development of the country, emphasizing that these energy sources not only contribute to caring for the planet by not depending on gas, coal or oil, but also use abundant resources such as the sun, water and wind, which translates into lower and decreasing costs over time. “This means that rates will decrease as time goes by,” said the president.

The head of state reported that his government has made significant progress in promoting renewable energy, managing to multiply the installed capacity in the country by ten. “Today we have 1,000 energy communities under construction and 100 already in operation. These communities are joining together to build and own generators of clean energy powered by the sun,” he stressed.

The president also mentioned concrete examples, such as the La María neighborhood, where roofs are being transformed into solar panels with the support of the government. This initiative will allow residents to significantly reduce the high electricity rates they currently pay. “Powered by the sun, wind or water, this energy is clean and cheap. Residents would no longer pay the absurd bills that for decades have taken away their money to buy bread, milk and eggs,” he explained.

President Petro concluded his speech by calling on all Colombians to join the ‘Energy Communities’ program promoted by the Government of Change. “These communities can show us the future. Any community in Colombia, whether in a remote village or in a neighborhood of a large city, can register and apply through our Ministry of Mines and Energy,” he said.

Finally, the president recalled that the change demanded by the popular mandate implies the construction of an energy system based on family and community self-generation, as well as clean and green energy projects that take advantage of the country’s natural wealth. “Let’s continue to advance in the Fair Energy Transition. We will change the tariff formula and you will have the opportunity to support us to prevent powerful interests from continuing to harm the well-being of the people,” he concluded.
