Bulgaria will host the competition in 2027.
Two silver medals were won by the Bulgarian teams in the European Olympiad in Experimental Sciences EOES 2024, which was held from April 7 to 14 in Luxembourg, the press center of the Ministry of Education and Science reported.
45 teams from 23 member states of the European Union and one visiting team from Ukraine took part in the Olympics.
Each team consisted of three students of no more than 17 years of age, the MES specified. The participants in Team A were Raya Shikova (physics) from the Natural and Mathematical High School in Gabrovo, Teodor Kusev (chemistry) and Boyan Tsenov (biology) – both from the National Natural and Mathematical High School.
Team B included Alexander Nikolov (physics) – First Private Mathematical High School in Sofia, Mira Dulevska (chemistry) – Sofia Mathematical High School and Andrey Dichev (biology) from 91 German Language High School.
The students from our teams were chosen among the winners of the national Olympiads in chemistry and biology and the national autumn competition in physics.
During the first competition day, the students solved tasks related to the application of various methods for the study of carcinogenic factors in the environment – the influence of UV radiation on cell growth, measurement of natural radioactivity, as well as qualitative chemical analysis of potentially carcinogenic substances.
In the second round, the tasks were devoted to the science behind the amusements we enjoy in amusement parks, like the example of the traditional Luxembourg festival D’Schueberfouer. Students studied the mechanics of roller coasters and the optical properties of lighting systems. Ingredients in foods and drinks traditionally offered at this festival were analyzed. Evolutionary relationships and phylogenetic development of fish based on cellular properties of blood and morphology of fish scales were investigated.
Competitors had to apply a variety of analytical research techniques: spectrophotometry, electrophoresis, cell counting, PCR, dissection, titration, electrical and optical measurements.
Team leaders are Assoc. Dr. Hristina Andreeva (Physics, Coordinator for Bulgaria, SU “St. Kl. Ohridski” and Institute of Electronics of BAS), Chief Assistant Dr. Kalina Pachedzhieva (Biology, SU “St. Kliment Ohridski”), and co-leaders in chemistry – Ch. assistant professor Dr. Hristo Rasheev (SU “St. Kliment Ohridski”) and Vladimir Tsvetkov (CSUCP “Abraham Lincoln”).
As an observer in connection with the upcoming hosting of our country in 2027, Prof. Viktor Ivanov (physics, SU “St. Kliment Ohridski”) also took part.
In 2027, Bulgaria will host the European Olympiad in Experimental Sciences EOES.
