Bulgarian students in informatics won 4 silver medals from the 36th edition of the International Informatics Olympiad in Egypt in competition with over 350 participants from over 90 countries, reports the Association of Olympic Teams in Natural Sciences.

The silver medals were won by Daniel Koinov (11th grade, PPMG Shumen), who was only a few points away from the gold medals, Boris Mihov (11th grade, SMG), Veselin Markovich (11th grade, MG Varna) and Andrey Stefanov (9th grade, PCMG) . Their managers are Iliyan Yordanov (IMI-BAN) and Emil Injev (LogSoft).

Head Iliyan Yordanov commented immediately after the ceremony: “The Bulgarian team is in 21st place in the unofficial team ranking in terms of medals, as well as 10th place in the average number of points among all official teams! This is Bulgaria’s best performance at the Olympics in the last few years. We also retain the 5th place in terms of total number of medals from all editions of the Olympiad.

We wish the students even more success and congratulate everyone who contributed to their success.”

The initiative to hold the International Informatics Olympiad is Bulgarian. In 1987, Prof. Blagovest Sendov made a proposal at the 24th General Conference of UNESCO. As early as 1989, the first Olympics took place, and Bulgaria was the host. The competition is held in Pravets and the first chairman of the International Informatics Olympiad is Prof. Dr. Peter Kenderov.

So far, from all editions of the International Informatics Olympiad, Bulgarian students have won 127 medals – 27 gold, 55 silver and 45 bronze.
