A series of short narratives and digressions on the subject, offered to readers for a break under the umbrella

from Alessio Viola

Che pandemic would have changed everything we believed in few. Many more believed that at least the language, the word, could benefit from a situation that forced everyone, in spite of ourselves, to slow down the times and methods of communication. They thought that reflection would become daily bread not only for those who write, communicate or simply have fun on social media. That the language of social life would dry up, reduced to baroque frills and hustle and bustle, that in short, a universal drama would have forced us all to whisper rather than shout, to stem the rhetoric instead of floating like corks, to try to convey reflections memories verbal caresses in place of the propaganda or pseudo-literary slaps that dominate the world of words undisputed. And of the letters then. No way. We are at the pre-pandemic restoration without even the deposed monarchs of cultures and communication prior to the storm having gathered in Vienna. We continue in our newspapers to write governors instead of presidents, vacationers instead of tourists, we talk about failure if a girl arrives “alone” at the Olympics and does not win them or of eternal glory if a boy wins a gold. That is, if they both live with honor, the work and the passion they have chosen to cultivate. The literary festivals are resumed in all their splendor of Sanremo dei libri, where thoughtful characters crowd alongside garrulous acrobats and honest social followers who make them ephemeral singers of the time of emptiness and appearance. The word, mean, tries to survive.

Umbrella tales

These were once the months of umbrella tales, under that torrid shade pink readings, sports novels or gossip were preferred. Now under there the Strega prize is flaunted for selfies with piesof and the evening audience in the squares queues for the autograph of the VIP on duty, cook, dancer, poet or actor, what changes? Then they walk past the last surviving bookstores, almost empty, stop for a moment but choose to enter the trend shop next door, whatever that means. We here, like the aunts of the past, have always cultivated the story. The pleasure of memories, whispering thoughts built on a few things, those of our social life. On Corriere del Mezzogiorno the story has always been an integral part of the newspaper, it has its space between politics, news and sport … Also in this August. Well read, damn you! That if a dictatorship were to be desirable it would be that of compulsory reading. The read pass.
