The local outdoor pool operators had to worry recently, but now the facilities are being stormed again.

Just a few days ago it was raining non-stop, the temperatures sometimes dropped into the single digits, children were seen with gloves, adults put on hats and wrapped themselves in wool vests – and that in August. Quite a few had already written off the summer, but now it is celebrating a comeback that has it all. The thermometer should show up to 35 degrees Celsius in the coming days – almost exaggerated. One professional group can be happy about such prospects: the operators of the local outdoor pools. Then the big rain came: Ewald Petritsch – he manages the fortunes of the Rheinauen in Hohenems. And there were already 80,000 visitors by the end of July. In an average year, this figure is 75,000. Up until this point in the previous year, as many as 95,000 people had visited the Rheinauen. “That was a particularly good summer, but this year it didn’t look so bad,” comments Petritsch on this interim report. But then came the heavy rain. For three weeks bathing and cooling off was out of the question. On the contrary, in many apartments the heaters were even turned on. But now Petritsch is happy about the stable high that is over Vorarlberg. “It could still be quite good, so far there have been 7,000 people in August alone,” says the outdoor pool operator optimistically. On an average weekday, between 2,000 and 3,000 people flock to the pool, on a Saturday or Sunday it can be 4,000 to 5,000. He hopes that the nice weather will last as long as possible, because “if it gets cold in mid-August, then the season is over,” he knows. So it’s no wonder that Petritsch checks the weather every day with three weather services in Vorarlberg and three in Switzerland. September 10th is the end Whatever the weather develops: September 10th is the end anyway. An extension of the season is out of the question for Petritsch, even if the weather is good. In the Corona year 2020 he was able to gain corresponding experience. At that time he kept the gates of the Rheinauen open a week longer, the temperatures were over 30 degrees: “Nevertheless, it wasn’t worth it. At some point, even the regular guests will no longer feel like swimming,” he says with a wink.
