Working Mother Outraged After Being Overcharged Nearly $2,800 for Grocery Order

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio – A working mother in Liberty Township, Ohio expressed her outrage after being charged nearly $2,800 for a $282 grocery order. Jill McCormick, who has a daughter with disabilities, relies on ordering her groceries through the Kroger app to manage her busy schedule.

However, her usual routine was disrupted when an order for $282 in groceries turned into a shocking charge of $2,783.25. McCormick claims that she did not place the order for the additional groceries and never received them.

McCormick’s panic escalated when she discovered the excessive charge on her bank statement. “My heart stopped because I’m thinking panic mode. Something is happening, and I have to react very quickly, and I didn’t even know where to start,” she said.

To make matters worse, the Instacart shopper she had been communicating with suddenly stopped responding. The shopper later claimed that the charge was an error and assured McCormick it would be canceled. However, after an hour of trying to reach someone from Instacart, McCormick finally managed to get the company to cancel the order.

A report from WCPO-TV revealed that a Kroger spokesperson acknowledged the overcharge incident, stating, “We understand a customer was overcharged for an order placed on August 9, 2023. We rectified the incident as soon as it was brought to our attention with an expedited refund to the customer’s original form of payment and a gift card to apologize for the inconvenience.”

However, McCormick was dissatisfied with the resolution offered by Kroger. She was informed that the refund might take seven to 10 business days, and the compensation amount in the form of a gift card proved to be insufficient. “They gave me $20 for my $3,000 that was taken out of my account,” McCormick said.

Disappointed with the response from Kroger, McCormick expressed her hesitancy to shop online from the grocery store again. “I’m not looking for that,” she stated. “I’m looking for a fix and outcome. How about we show results so someone else, another family, is not going through this.”

WCPO-TV attempted to reach out to Kroger to inquire about any preventative measures against overcharging, but the company did not respond to the inquiry.

Meanwhile, McCormick has taken action by filing a police report with her local sheriff’s office to address the situation.

This incident serves as a reminder for customers to remain vigilant while shopping online and to promptly address any unexpected charges or discrepancies.
