Administrative action taken against 9 doctors who violated ‘abuse action standards’
Over the past five years, the number of appetite suppressant prescriptions reported to the government system has exceeded 1 billion tablets. It is pointed out that thorough management is required as it is a narcotic drug that affects the central nervous system and causes dependence.
According to data on ‘Obesity treatment prescription and distribution status’ received from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety by People Power Party lawmaker Choi Bo-yoon, a member of the National Assembly Health and Welfare Committee, on the 4th, the number of patients prescribed appetite suppressants from 2020 to last May was about 1.23 million on average per year. The total number of prescriptions amounts to 1,060,960,805 tablets.
244,952,097 tablets for 1,261,846 people in 2021, 242,873,243 tablets for 1,205,439 people in 2022, 226,997,378 tablets for 1,143,759 people last year, and 78 tablets from January to May of this year. There were 2,950 people and the number of prescriptions was 92,431,815.
Looking at the prescription status by ingredient, prescriptions for phentermine and phendimetrazine account for a significant portion of the total prescriptions, and the prescription volume is still high this year. Among them, phentermine was the most prescribed ingredient, with 86,968,942 in 2020 and 66,860,700 in 2023.
Although the number of prescriptions and the number of patients has been decreasing in recent years, the annual prescription amount reached an average of 197 tablets per person, and there were 9 doctors who were referred for administrative action for violating the ‘Standards for Preventing Misuse of Narcotics’.
Representative Choi Bo-yoon said, “As appetite suppressants are narcotic drugs that affect the central nervous system and cause dependence, more thorough management at the government level is needed.” He added, “Measures must be taken to ensure safe treatment for patients and prevent abuse in medical settings.” “Arrangements need to be made,” he said.
