Today, I am thrilled to be speaking with Dr. Elena Stoyanova, an expert in tourism economics, who has been analyzing trends and developments in the industry. Welcome, Dr. Stoyanova!
Dr. Elena Stoyanova: Thank you for having me! It’s a pleasure to be here.
Interviewer: Let’s dive right in. The recent data shows that Bulgaria is on track to attract 13 million visitors by the end of 2024. What do you think this means for the Bulgarian tourism sector?
Dr. Stoyanova: This goal of 13 million visitors is indeed ambitious but quite achievable given the current momentum. The projected BGN 14 billion in tourism revenues signifies not just a recovery post-pandemic but also a new benchmark of success for our industry. It reflects Bulgaria’s growing attractiveness as a competitive destination in Europe.
Interviewer: That’s significant! You mentioned competitiveness. How does Bulgaria compare to other European destinations in terms of attracting tourists from diverse markets?
Dr. Stoyanova: Bulgaria is becoming increasingly popular, especially among visitors from countries like the UK, Germany, and France. The diversity in tourist demographics is essential; it provides resilience against fluctuations in any single market. The fact that Romanian tourists lead in numbers shows our proximity and cultural ties, but attracting a wider range of nationalities is a strategic advantage.
Interviewer: Absolutely. With 10.7 million foreign tourists recorded by the end of September 2024, why do you think Bulgaria is becoming more attractive to international tourists?
Dr. Stoyanova: Multiple factors come into play. Firstly, Bulgaria’s rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and favorable climate are appealing. The government’s efforts to promote lesser-known destinations and enhance tourism infrastructure have also contributed significantly. Moreover, Bulgaria offers excellent value for money, which is increasingly important to travelers, especially in times of economic fluctuation.
Interviewer: Speaking of infrastructure, what developments can we expect in the coming months to further support this growth trajectory?

Additionally, investments in sustainable tourism practices are critical. These will not only make travel more enjoyable but also ensure that our natural resources are protected for future generations.

Dr. Stoyanova: Certainly! Local tourism is actually thriving. Many Bulgarians are exploring domestic destinations, which helps to boost the local economy and instills pride in our cultural heritage. This domestic interest often complements international tourism, as local experiences attract foreign visitors seeking authenticity.
