Ovid “The Mouse” Guzman, son of “El Chapo” Guzman, remains under custody of the United States Department of Justice.

This was announced separately by the US Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, and the US Attorney, Merrick B. Garland.

The first was announced at the end of a statement released on his X account (@USAmbMex) in which he referred to the arrests of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán, another of “El Chapo’s” sons, leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel:

“I can also confirm that Ovidio Guzmán López remains in U.S. custody.”

For his part, the U.S. Attorney, in a press conference alluding to the aforementioned arrests, indicated that these arrests are in addition to that of “El Ratón,” who “faces charges for trafficking large quantities of cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine.”

On the subject, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) said in the morning press conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador that:

“The US Embassy also informed us that he has not been released, that he is definitely not released, there is a change in the precautionary measure, we are also waiting for official information about this arrest, given that the Mexican Government collaborated in this extradition and of course in the capture.”

And when asked if she could be a protected witness in that country, the federal official said that so far “there is an indication that this could have been the case.”

Yesterday, after the arrest of “El Mayo” and his brother Joaquín, in a query to the Federal Prisons Office, it was reported that Ovidio Guzmán was released from prison on July 23.

The record indicates that the inmate may still be on parole, under supervision, or in the custody of some other criminal justice system, so it is not known what type of process he is facing.

Ovidio Guzmán was extradited a few months ago and is the protagonist of the so-called Culiacanzo.

The son of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán was arrested in Culiacán on February 5 and was being held in the Altiplano federal prison.

The high point of Ovidio Guzmán and Los Chapitos was the so-called Culiacanazo, in 2019, when he was arrested by the Army, but the operation failed and he was released due to threats from the Sinaloa Cartel and clashes.

According to public information, Ovidio has a hearing on September 30 in the Chicago Court.
